The morning started unlike any other sports event in the nation. It began by student athletes learning the value of giving back. They each were required to bring one canned food item to feed the homeless through our Keeping Dreams Alive Foundation Food Drive.

They brought hundreds of cans of food that will be donated to the local food bank. A lesson in gratitude that we hope will become a daily habit. Coach Kehoe put those lineman through the most grueling challenges these lineman have competed in and their high school coaches had ever seen.

The morning round started with 10 high school teams competing and by the afternoon Team Challenge there were only 5 left to compete for the title. It was a test of their will and attitude and the strong survived. There were also 2 MVP awards given out after the morning event. Both athletes that won play for the Piper Bengals.

Coach Coleman had his young men in shape and ready to compete to win too. The Elite 7v7 event started the morning session with pool play with some high flying action as the teams battled for points to get the highest seed possible for the afternoon single elimination Championship Rounds. Congratulations to all who competed, you are all winners. And congratulations to the Western Wildcats for winning the coveted Championship Cup. The Cup will have a nameplate with their name that will forever be placed on the Cup and they will keep it at their school for everyone to see until returning it next year to defend their title.

A special thanks all of the participating high school coaches that made this event such a huge success. And a special thanks to Coach Willis May for bringing 4 superstar freshmen football players that volunteered for the event.

These young men were an integral part in the success of the event as well. Also, a huge thanks to Ryan Stoutt and Bob Webster for keeping the event running smooth and making sure the athletes and fans were fed and hydrated. It goes without saying, thank you McArthur High School for allowing the Keeping Dreams Alive Foundation the opportunity to have such great events at such a great facility.

None of this would have been possible without the support and sponsorship of all of the student athletes by the Keeping Dreams Alive Foundation kdafoundation. Follow us. Become a Fan. The tournament will feature Marietta, Wheeler and South Cobb, along with other teams from around the metro-Atlanta area. Morgan credited the facilities Marietta has available as a reason to host the tournament again. He also mentioned that the entire operation ran smoothly last year.

Morgan did not have a special game plan for the 7-on-7, instead focusing on it like it is a normal game. Last year, the Blue Devils finished as the runner-up, and Morgan said it is a chance for his players to compete, and improve in every facet.

Apart from the football knowledge he will give to the players, Morgan said the biggest thing Newton preaches is helping out the community. By Callie Caplan. Read more of our top stories — football and other sports — here. As the bus rolled down an Atlanta highway one late May afternoon, one of the most polarizing figures in Texas high school football sat in a front-row seat and scrolled through messages on his phone. One came from Georgia Tech's football staff. It was urgent. The coaches were in a rush. They're going to want to go right back to their boards. All were still sweaty. Just before the mile drive, they finished the first round of a national tournament for 7-on-7, a noncontact, unregulated sport originally intended to keep quarterbacks, receivers and defensive backs active and improving during the offseason.

Players highlight competition and travel as reason to pay thousands of dollars to join the growing national phenomenon of select 7-on-7 while still playing for their high schools. Select 7-on-7 coaches emphasize social media exposure and college recruiting connections they provide. But the latter role has concerned Texas high school football coaches, who feel the third-party initiative threatens their primal authority.

The two sides of coaching have developed an ongoing feud about the best way to direct athletes to college football. But also at the center are teenagers whose natural talents and dedication have fostered the push for control, and True Buzz's Memorial Day weekend stop at Georgia Tech offered yet another example for contention. Is the motivation monetary from whatever aspect or is it truly altruistic in trying to help a kid?

Next weekend, 7-on-7 will reach its annual pinnacle in the state: the Texas State 7on7 Organization's final high school tournament June and The Opening's all-star football recruit summit June July 3 at The Star. Select 7-on-7, an unaffiliated national network of more than programs, has become a hybrid. Ten years ago, individual players — most from the West Coast and Florida — attended camps, forming squads for a weekend.

Select 7-on-7 has no local leagues or commissioner oversight. Age groups span from under-8 to rising high school seniors.

The activity has a strong presence in Dallas and Houston, options in Austin and San Antonio but little traction in rural areas. The expansion reflects another grassroots idea — AAU basketball — but comparisons are tricky.

It hasn't regulated select 7-on-7 because recruiters more often use fall football for evaluation. But consider apparel companies' involvement with 7-on-7, and the NCAA's need to monitor compliance grows. Adidas holds its own 7-on-7 national championship. Battle, a football-only brand, sponsors Pylon — the most popular 7-on-7 tournament series — and outfits about 40 programs nationwide.

Battle sponsors True Buzz. Nike affiliates with Team Texas Swoosh, another Dallas-based program. A FBI investigation exposed a corrupt underbelly of AAU basketball and college recruiting, involving coaches, apparel executives and agents entangled in bribery and fraud for elite players' commitments.

As select 7-on-7 has grown this decade, the origins for comparison to AAU have developed, multiple sources with knowledge of the NCAA's awareness of the sport's evolution said.

That experience has spread beyond the yard 7-on-7 fields to college campuses nationwide. True Buzz's visit to Georgia Tech was the latest example of a trend its coaches say they created. During almost every tournament trip the last four years, True Buzz has arranged unofficial visits to local colleges, building relationships between schools, players and the organization.

But 7-on-7 coaches assisting recruitment with increasing force prompts uncertainty about funding. Others, such as True Buzz, registered as non-profits.Thirty-five of the top teams in the state will experience some of the best competition in Georgia in the Corky Kell 7 ON 7 Invitational Tournament and fans are invited to join us for the action!
